The Centenary Heritage Database

Historic Golf Clubs
in Canada

Canada embraced golf early and enthusiastically. From the historic clubs of Quebec and Ontario to the courses of British Columbia, Canada's golfing tradition stretches back well over a century — shaped by British influence, vast landscapes, and a quiet pride in the game. This is our complete record of every Canadian golf club over 100 years old.

Golf came to Canada in the 1870s, brought by Scottish and English settlers who saw in the open Canadian landscape something that reminded them of home. The Royal Montreal Golf Club, founded in 1873, was among the first clubs established in North America — a distinction that speaks to how quickly the game took root in Canadian soil.

As the country grew, golf grew with it. By the early 20th century, clubs had been established in every major Canadian city and in many smaller communities. The climate meant short seasons in much of the country, which made the game all the more precious — something to be anticipated, savoured, and passed down through generations of members.

Canada has 165 golf clubs in The Centenary database that are 100 years or older. Among them are 6 clubs that hold a Royal designation. From the manicured parkland of Ontario to the dramatic terrain of the west coast, Canadian historic golf is varied and largely underappreciated by the wider golfing world.

Below you will find the complete list, ordered by founding year. We also show which clubs currently qualify for The Centenary network based on our Provenance Index — our transparent measure of a club's international and regional standing.
