Historic Golf Clubs
in Northern Ireland

Golf has been played in Northern Ireland since the 1880s, when the first clubs were established along the coast of County Down and County Antrim. The terrain was ideal — glacial drumlins meeting the sea, natural bunkers carved by centuries of wind, and turf that needed little more than a mower to become a world-class playing surface. Royal County Down and Royal Portrush emerged from this landscape and have never left the conversation about the world's greatest courses.

Behind those two famous names lies a quieter but equally proud tradition. Clubs like Portstewart, Ballycastle, and Castlerock have maintained their character and their greens through more than a century of Northern Irish life — less celebrated internationally, but deeply valued by those who know them.

Northern Ireland has 41 golf clubs in The Centenary database that are 100 years or older. Among them are 3 clubs that hold a Royal designation. The density of exceptional golf in such a compact geography is remarkable — and largely still undiscovered by the international golfing public.
